Who are the Berbers? The Berbers of Central Morocco (BCM) are part of a larger "people group" (people separated by language, social, and/or religious barriers, even though they may live within the political boundaries of the same country) called the Shilha Berbers. They reside in the High Atlas Mountains of central Morocco as well as the Middle Atlas Mountains along the border of Algeria.
The BCM are semi-nomadic shepherds who primarily raise sheep and goats, though some farm. They maintain permanent villages, and move their herds to the warm plains during winter months, depending on how high in the mountains they reside. Very few villages have running water or electricity.
Among the BCM, it is common for three or four generations to live in the same dwelling. All family members acknowledge a common male ancestor. Family structure is like an authoritarian democracy, with the head of the family being responsible for controlling and administering all household matters, though he must come to an agreement with the rest of the family. Banishment from the family is considered the ultimate punishment.
What are their beliefs? The Berbers of Central Morocco are 99% Muslim; however, their religious practices are based more on traditions and the decisions of the community than on the Islamic holy book known as the Koran. In urban areas, orthodox Islam prevails; whereas, in rural areas, ancient beliefs and customs are intermingled with their Muslim faith. Originally Christian, in the eighth century, invading Arabs forced the Berbers to accept Islam. Learn more about Islam
Eastview's Commitment Today, though there are some BCM believers, much prayer is needed to see the remaining population of Muslims return to the God of their forefathers. By "adopting" the Berbers of Central Morocco, Eastview has committed to help this happen through prayer, sending missionaries and resources.
How Can I Pray?
- Ask God to grant wisdom and favor to the missions agencies that are currently working among the BCM.
- Pray that the laws which restrict the preaching of the Gospel in Morocco will be changed.
- Pray for God to anoint the Gospel as it goes forth via radio to the BCM.
- Ask the Lord to encourage and protect the BCM believers who are in Morocco.
- Take authority over the principalities and powers that are keeping the Berbers of Central Morocco bound in spiritual darkness.
- Ask God to call forth prayer teams who will begin breaking up the soil through worship and intercession.
- Ask God to reveal Himself to the BCM through dreams and visions.
- Pray that the strong local churches will be raised up among the BCM.
